How to choose the best home services provider for your business

Written by Chappy | October,5,2022

Every business owner in the home services industry wishes quality leads would simply fall from the sky; however, it just isn’t that simple, as gaining new business often requires putting in some time and work.

However, the good news is that, like many aspects of running a successful business, there are typically some trade tricks that will help make your life easier as a business owner. One of the best ways to gain leads is to make sure your business is listed on one of the best home services websites. Angi, Thumbtack and HomeAdvisor all promise to make the process of finding customers easier. But do they?

Well, yes… But Chappy does it better! Join us as we examine each of these platforms in closer detail - laying down common provider complaints.

The drawbacks of Angi

Their sorting list is suspect:

  1. Angi makes a big point to say they’re consumer-driven, when in fact “70% of their revenue comes from advertising. It’s not advertising Coca Cola, it’s advertising from the companies they rate,” explains Jeff Blyskal, a senior editor for Consumer Reports.” While companies do not pay to be listed on Angi, companies can pay to appear higher up in the search results. This compromises the validity of the Angi sorting system, because if you’re looking for a provider, you’re only going to look at the first page or two.
  2. Want to show up higher on Angi’s rankings? Their algorithm prioritizes contractors who offer coupons and discounts, so be ready to trim those profits!

Chappy’s solution - Chappy doesn't charge for priority, and our ratings are not skewed by coupons or discounts. As long as you provide a great service to the customer, your ratings will be reflected.

Shared leads can be low-quality leads

Like most home service provider sites, Angi is a shared lead service, so anytime a new lead is sent to you, Angi sends that same lead (and all of their information) to any other registered providers in the same area. Because the same contact receives multiple calls from various businesses, they typically begin ignoring calls/messages after the first few estimates are scheduled. So if you’re not available to respond to a lead within the first 1-2 minutes you’ll end up paying for someone’s voicemail!

Chappy’s solution - Chappy only passes on a customer’s information after they have accepted a bid. This means customers don’t get bombarded with calls and also gives providers 48 hours to submit their bid to Chappy, which we then present to the customer.

The trouble with Thumbtack

Often you're paying for nothing:

The biggest reason providers complain about Thumbtack is because you must pay for the lead, even if they don’t hire you. When a customer reaches out to you directly from search results and their job matches your targeting preferences, you auto-pay for the lead. Naturally, not every potential lead is serious – some users are just in the beginning stages, so you may pay for leads that aren’t willing to spend money and commit to the project just yet.

Chappy’s solution - Chappy is free to use. It's that simple. Want to know something else cool? Chappy eats the credit card processing fees, so you keep more or your hard-earned money.

You need to buy credits:

As a provider, it is allegedly “free” to list your services on Thumbtack. What you will need to pay for is “credits” that you spend to obtain new leads through their website - it’s the only way you can do business! If the customer sees your profile and chooses to communicate with you, you must spend the credits.

Chappy’s solution - We are 100% transparent from the get-go. You won't be charged to join, submit a bid or follow up a lead.

HomeAdvisor hang-ups

The price per lead varies:

What you'll pay for a lead varies by the type of work you do and where your business is based - confusing right? On top of this, paying for leads through HomeAdvisor will eat into your profits, FAST, especially if you are signed up for (what they deem to be) more expensive leads and cannot convert leads into customers effectively.

Chappy’s solution - Like we keep saying… we are free to use! You can sign up with Chappy for free AND find clients without any fees.

Both Angi and HomeAdvisor are owned by the same company:

All the leads coming in through Angi are shared with HomeAdvisor, which makes the competition FIERCE. You could be competing with hundreds of providers for the same job, which usually means having to slash your prices if you want to secure the job.

Chappy’s solution - We aren’t in the Angi/HomeAdvisor gang so our provider pool is considerably smaller.

How does Chappy outperform the rest?

  • Keep more of your money - Chappy eats the credit card processing fees.
  • It’s FREE to use, for you and your clients - There’s nO hidden costs, just total transparency.
